Basic Guide to Rhinestone Transfers

rhinestone transfersRhinestone Transfers are a quick and easy way to spruce up your existing wardrobe or wardrobe accessories. The process usually involves filling up a template with holes punched in, with Rhinestones. The punched holes are in the shape of the design that you want transferred. Once the template is filled in, you apply a piece of special sticky tape onto the template and peel it off which lifts up all the Rhinestones from their holes. This tape is then heat-pressed onto the object you want Blinged up!

A variety of hot-fix Rhinestones like DMC Rhinestones, Korean Rhinestones etc. are used in the process. Rhinestones are specified by Stone Size, or SS. You can use this process to spruce up your Jeans, Tees, Bags, Shoes, Caps etc.

Rhinestone Transfers: How-to

Here is a more in-depth explanation of the process.

Raw Materials Required:

  • Hot-fix Rhinestones (RG2X, Swarovski, Korean, Czech etc.)
  • Transfer Tape (Monkey Tape or Tacky Tape which costs around $5/yard)
  • Tweezers
  • Iron
  • Make your design on a PC keeping in mind the dimensions of the area that you plan to do the Rhinestone transfer to.
  • Print it out on normal paper. Mirror the design by flipping it over in software, if possible.
  • If you have mirrored the image, you can use it as it is. If it is not, turn the paper over and place it on a glass-top table. Tape it down and put a light source under the table.
  • Since Rhinestones are transferred upside-down, the original image must be mirrored, either in the PC or on the table.
  • Gather your Rhinestones in small bowls, using different bowls for different sizes and colours.
  • Snip a piece of Transfer Paper which is slightly bigger than your design. This will make it easier to peel off later.
  • Remove the white backing from the Transfer Paper. Place the clear sticky half of the Transfer Paper onto your design, Sticky Side Up. Tape it up at the edges to prevent movement.
  • Place the Rhinestones face down onto the sticky transfer paper using Tweezers, exactly hugging the outlines of your design. Play around with your design until you are satisfied.
  • Once all the Rhinestones are in place, firmly re-affix its backing tape just as it was without disturbing the Rhinestones, and lift up the sticky tape by its corners.  Flip it over and carefully review your design. This is the last stage where you can make any changes.
  • Remove the backing paper and place the sticky sheet onto the garment or item you want to transfer the Rhinestones to.
  • Place a towel over the sticky sheet and set your Iron to High (but not steam).
  • Place the iron over the Rhinestone transfer but do not move it in a to and fro motion. Rather, let it rest half a minute or so on each section and apply even pressure by pressing down on the Iron.
  • Once sufficient heat has been applied to the entire design, remove the sticky sheet by peeling it off.
  • The Rhinestone design should now be transferred to your item!
